Compacts
Compacts are agreements between the government/ public sector and the
voluntary and community sector to improve their relationship for mutual
advantage. By building better relationships the Compact can help government
and the voluntary and community sector work better together for the communities
they serve.
The Deakin Commission on the Future of Voluntary Sector (1996) first called
for a government and voluntary and community sector formal agreement to
improve their relationship. Following wide consultation the first national
Compact was launched in 1998. More recently many local Compacts (between
local government, local public sector agencies and local voluntary and
community organisations) have been developed.
The national Compact is supported by five codes of practice: Funding;
Consultation; Volunteering; BME; and Community Groups. More information
about the national Compact and Compacts generally (including the consultation
on Compact Plus) is available at www.thecompact.org.uk
